MADISON—Verena Mary (Pulvermacher) Thony, age 91, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Verena was born in Roxbury, Wisconsin, on May 24, 1932, the daughter of Henry and Daisy Pulvermacher. Verena was married to John Thony. Together they had five children.

Verena was a free-spirited, fun-loving, creative, and adventurous girl when she was young. She grew up to be an independent woman who pursued several interests including arts and crafts, religion, and human rights. She became an advocate for others in her community wherever she lived.

Verena used her creative talents to produce and publish the “Pulvermacher Thony Tattler”, a family quarterly newsletter of up-to-date information of the families who’s who, what, when, and where. Verena produced 60 issues of the “Tattler” spanning over 20 years. What a remarkable legacy she left for family!

Verena is survived by her children, David, Diane (Helgeson), Joan, and Virginia; four granddaughters, Shannon (Ken) Saruwatashi, Christy Helgeson (Joe DiMarco), Erin (Nick) DeRango, and Samantha (Ben) Mund; four great-granddaughters, Lyla Saruwatashi, Seila Saruwatashi, Eula Saruwatashi, and Elaina Balsavich; and many nieces and nephews all whom she loved very much and who loved her.

Verena was preceded in death by her son, Joe; parents; brothers, Chester, Harry, and Richard, and sister, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Roslyn “Roz” Thony; and son-in-law, Lyle Helgeson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. A light meal will be served following the service.

A special thank you to Agrace HospiceCare staff in Madison, Wisconsin who took excellent care of her during the last days of her life.
