Obituary For Scott Alan Breitenbach

Sun Prairie - Scott Alan Breitenbach passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife, Ann by his side on April 29, 2024, after a 3-year journey with Bulbar ALS. He was born on August 2, 1964, in Madison, WI to parents, Donald and Evelyn (Curtis) Breitenbach.

Scott graduated from McFarland High School in 1982. During his school years he participated in wrestling, tennis, and track. He also played tenor saxophone in the band.

He attended UW Madison for one year and then transferred to UW Green Bay where he received his BA in Accounting.

While in Green Bay Scott met the love of his life Ann. They were married in 1992 and had 32 amazing years together. Scott and Ann raised their 2 daughters on a 12-acre farmette with horses, dogs and 40 cats in Columbus, WI before moving to Sun Prairie in 2015. Growing up on a family farm left a lasting impression on Scott. He developed a lifelong appreciation of farming through this family tradition. He enjoyed baling hay and loved riding his antique Allis Chalmers tractor.

Scott worked in the accounting field for a tax accountant, a millwork company, and a John Deere Dealership before he found his way to American Family Insurance company. Scott was at American Family for 24 years as a Senior Systems Analyst for the accounting department. Scott enjoyed his work and loved the people he worked with. He remained close to those in his department even after he retired in December 2021, when he was diagnosed with a mutated gene for Bulbar ALS.

Suffering through a disease was not new to Scott. Scott had chronic knee pain since he was 13 years old. Despite being in constant pain, Scott lived his life the way Jesus asked us to – to take up our cross and follow Him. Scott’s faith and love for God and Jesus gave him the strength he needed to get through each day. Scott never let his pain affect his mood or how he treated others. He continued using this God given strength through his ALS journey. He was determined to live each day to the fullest and not be defined by a disease. When asked how he was doing, he began saying “Every Day Is A Blessing”.

Scott’s chronic knee pain did not stop him from staying active. He farmed, rode horses, golfed, bowled, hiked, and biked. Once ALS set in Scott was only able to bike. He loved to bike with family and friends as often as possible saying, “I don’t feel like I have ALS when I bike.”

Scott is preceded in death by his father Don, mother Evie, brother Mark, sister Karen, and foster brother Verdell.

Scott is survived by his wife Ann; daughter Amanda (Alex), and grandson Atlas; daughter Stephanie (Kyle) grandson Tucker and granddaughter Quinn. Scott’s siblings Lynne (David), Kathy, Kurt (Laura), Janet (Eric), 23 nieces and nephews and his in-laws.

For those who knew Scott, he will leave a huge hole in our lives. He treated everyone he met as if they were family. He is an inspiration to others and will be remembered as caring, kind-hearted, and encouraging. As much as we will miss Scott, we are so happy he is now pain free and living with our Holy Father and Jesus in Heaven.

We love you, Scott. You will be missed every day. “Well done good and faithful servant.”

A special thank you to our loving and supportive family – Janet, Amanda (Hoot), Stephanie, Kyle, Amanda and Alex, Ray and Julie, David and Marian, Mary, Sue and Doug, Paul and Marie, Steve and Barb. And, to Our Heavenly Father who was with us every moment of every day on this journey, we could not have gotten through this without Him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Scott through Amfam. Scott came down to greet me on my first day of work, and we continued working in the same department for the next 20 years, becoming great friends. Scott also got me involved in the Amfam bowling league on his team where we bowled together and I met many great friends for 10 years. Eventually I became Scott's manager where he had the great work perseverance of making sure everything was done correctly, I never had to worry when Scott was on the case. Even as Scott was diagnosed with this terrible disease, we stayed in touch, and I would continue to help the cause with the ALS walk yearly. I will miss my friend, but I'm glad he's in a better place now and the pain is gone.

Scott you were a special man. I meet you when you were 14 and came to the dairy farm to help milk. I knew back then you would grow up to be a great person and would touch many lives a long your journey and time here on earth before you were called home. Wish we could have lived closer to you guys. You will be missed everyday but the love you gave us will help us through. Until we meet again. Ann may the love and great life you shared give you more and more comfort each day until you are together again. May God Bless you and all Love Kurt, Laura and family.

Scott accomplished a lot in his life. He also helped others accomplish their goals. I am so grateful that he stepped into my life to tutor me in accounting for an MATC class. Scott was a very patient man as he took me from accounting chaos to many "aha" moments. He helped me reach my goal of getting a very good grade. Scott never asked for, or wanted, anything for being my tutor. Over the years of friendship, he never asked for anything. Near the end of his life, he did ask if I would go bicycling with Ann...to which I said "You bet!" I am honored to ride with the woman he loved so much. It was great to be on Scott's "Every Day Is A Blessing" team, and to be part of his ALS journey. My sympathy to Ann and the entire family.

Knew Scott well at AMFAM and he joined a few of us every year for our annual Lawsonia 36-hole day of golf in the fall. Scott was such a nice guy! Enjoyed talking to him very much. My condolences to his wife and family.

I didn't get to meet your dad, Stephanie, but I feel like I know him now after reading this wonderful tribute to what is clearly an amazing son, dad, friend, husband, and brother. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. May he rest in eternal glory and peace. Love, Liz

I met and worked with Scott for many years at amfam. A great guy and very talented fintech expert. There was no amount of work craziness that could faze his always calm demeanor! Scott obviously carried that into his battle with ALS. RIP my friend!

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
