Obituary For Robert "Bob" J. Winckler

DEFOREST - Robert “Bob” Winckler, age 61, passed away on August 16, 2022, after a two-year battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Sue. Loving father of Kelly, Matt (Hannah), and Leah. Proud new grandpa to Lydia Winckler.

Bob was born to George and Martina (Gau) Winckler and raised in West Bend, WI, along with his siblings Kathleen (James) Fritz, Carol (Bill) Osborne, and John (Kate) Winckler. He attended UW-Madison, where he was a 4-year starting offensive lineman for the Badgers, and where he met, and fell in love with Sue. After settling in DeForest, Bob’s greatest accomplishment was raising his children. He gave them unconditional love, taught them discipline, and was a lasting picture of strength. Nothing brought him more joy than watching his kids grow, coaching Matt in youth football, basketball, and baseball, or watching his daughters compete in swimming. He also assisted in coaching the Norski Football Team for many years. Bob also enjoyed fishing, hiking out west, and keeping things light through humor.

Bob is survived by his wife of 36 years, his children, and siblings. He is also survived by Sue’s siblings, Peggy (Ken) Nowak, Christine (Charles) Jaskowiak, Amy (Trent) Nelson, and Tom (Carrianne) Spaltholz, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, William and Nancy Spaltholz. The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the staff at UW Carbone Cancer Center, UW Hospital, the wonderful team at Agrace Hospice. We are grateful for Bob’s football brothers and our community of friends for their loving support.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at Ryan Funeral Home, 6924 Lake Rd. DeForest, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Monday, August 22, 2022, at Door Creek Church (Sprecher Road Campus), 6602 Dominion Drive, Madison, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s name may be given to UW Carbone Cancer Center. A fund is also being set up for a DeForest Youth Football Scholarship and a Yahara River Trail memorial.

Dear Sue, Kelly, Matt and Leah, I'm SO sorry I missed finding out about your husband and Dad's passing. I just happened to see his notice in today's Sunday paper. Bob was simply the best! You were all most blessed to have the best family man and best parent ever. He was my insurance agent for many years, always quick with a joke and devoted to sharing the latest news on each of you (I married an insurance guy from Chicago or Bob would have still been my go-to guy!) He'd be proud if you remember the lessons he taught you and how very much he loved you! I know he now lives on in each of you. I miss you all. ❤️ All my best, Sue (Tennent) Nichols

My name is John "V" Nelson and I worked with Bob @ Lifetouch before I retired in 2008. I had the Milwaukee territory. I nicknamed Bob Hog" since he was drafted by the Redskins. I have a message for his wife and especially his kids. One day I needed a big camera piece and Hog brought me what I needed. It weighed a ton, well not quite. As a result my camera guy was able to finish the "shoot" and all the families were taken care of. What I wanted to tell Hog's son and daughters was follow in your Dad's footsteps. When God calls you to help someone it's not a random act of kindness, it's seeing the right thing to do. I pray 🙏 that for my family. And I pray 🙏 that for your family. Maybe I'll stop sometime to see y'all. Here's my email if you want to reply: jvnelson9@gmail.com.

Sue and family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I first met Bob through work (DMW) but we developed a good friendship and golfed many Friday mornings before work for 2-3 years. He helped me while I coached youth football and always had my back. We both agreed "Moose Tracks" is one of the finest ice creams ever made 🙂 Bob took me to at least 3 NFL Alumni golf outings and dinners and I really enjoyed his friendship. I as still shocked to lose a friend of the same age. I will miss him too. My prayers are with you all. God Bless. Brian Brandstetter

Bob was a special person in real life and now we have special memories of him. Like when we had to take a car ride to St. Lawrence to get a helmet that would fit, to his playing for the Badgers, being selected in the draft, and the Super Bowl ring. He was such a warm person. You all have my deepest sympathy. My thoughts and prayers are with you. A very fond memory I have of Bob is when he made Kelly's 7th grade mythology project video. It was so funny and extremely well edited. The best 7th grade project in my 33 years as a teacher.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
