Obituary For Richard S. Hartig

Richard S. Hartig, age 75, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2020. Richard (Rick) was born on March 9, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY to Richard and Dorothy (Johnson) Hartig. Due to his father’s transfers for work he lived in NY, NJ, St. Louis and Minneapolis before graduating from Edina High School in Minnesota before attending Drake University to begin his college education. He chose to leave school early to enter into the U.S. Army where he served his time as a Field Artillery Operations and Intelligence assistant in Korea. In 1970 he left the Army to complete his college education with a Bachelor's degree at the University of Minnesota and eventually a master's degree in Architecture.

Rick's career as an architect included working in a variety of industries that brought him to Chicago, Sturgeon Bay WI, Canton NY, Appleton WI and eventually retired from the Department of Administration of Wisconsin in Madison WI in 2014. In addition to his work, he had an interest in Art Deco and Frank Lloyd Wright design, watching baseball, and a collector of model trains.

Rick is survived by wife, Kathy Hartig; daughter, Samantha (Brad Schueth) Hartig; sister, Bette (Wayne) Defferding; niece Katie Schalk and her children, JJ and Izzy Schalk; nephew, Brian Defferding; uncle Joseph Watson and family in NY and Cleveland; and friends.

Samantha and family would like to thank the medical team including Dr. Hegeman at the University of Madison Carbone Cancer Center and the staff at Agrace Hospice facility for their expertise, kindness and compassion.

No service will be held at this time and will be postponed until we can celebrate together in a safe environment.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
