Obituary For Phillip William McMahon
MADISON- Phillip W. McMahon, age 69, passed away peacefully in his home in Madison on Monday, August 17, 2020, surrounded by his wife and their four children. Phillip, son of Thomas and Beryl McMahon (Brickwood) was born in Madison on August 9th, 1951. He is a graduate of Deforest High School. Phillip served two years active duty in the US Marine Corps (1969-71) prior to completing two years at UW Eau Claire. He then moved back to Madison and started work at Webcrafters Inc, where he worked for over 35 years. Phillip was a long-time member of both Madison East Bible Church as well as City Church.
Phillip met his wife, Sandy, at Madison East Bible Church. Their first date was a ride in a corn truck, follow up dates consisted of walking dogs and attending church. They married in 1982, and raised four children, who called their father “Pop.” “Pop” will be remembered for his dedication to both work and fun. He never said no when it came to candy, and started a “Christmas Soda” tradition, lining the walls of the family basement with every flavor he could find. “Pop” would pull over to take family photos in fields of dandelions and pack the whole family into the car to drive across the country to visit all four corners of the US. He loved to spend time searching for treasures with his metal detector while listening to audio books, listening to his music loud enough to hear over the vacuum, and watching movies.
Phillip is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sandra K. McMahon (Freitag) and children Kay, Frank (Heidi), Louis, and Jackie; as well as two grandchildren, Henry and Owen McMahon. His four siblings Mike (Sue) McMahon, Paul (Nancy) McMahon, twin brother John (Candy) McMahon, and sister Mary (David) Paulson. Phillip is also survived by his parents-in-law, Jack and Joyce Freitag, sisters-in-law Cindy Johnson, and Tammy (Byron) Rutland. Phillip was an uncle to 15 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beryl and Thomas McMahon.
Phillip was looking forward to celebrating the marriage of his youngest daughter, Jackie, to her fiancé Nic Schwinn, as well as his own 38th wedding anniversary this October. His faith in Jesus was a testimony to many. His family is confident that since his earthly passing, Phillip has begun to make good on the many races he challenged other believers to in heaven, we imagine he will run 800 miles in record time.
A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens with Pastor Dave Bechtold presiding.
A special thanks to the staff at Agrace Hospice for their care and support. His family welcomes donations made in Phillip’s honor to Mercy Ships: donate.mercyships.org
