Obituary For Nancy Rose Oswald

Verona - Nancy Rose Oswald, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 30, 2024. She lived life to its fullest and positively impacted many lives with her kindness and giving nature.

Nancy, the youngest of three children of Edward and Florence Micka, was born on September 18, 1936, in Darlington, Wisconsin. She graduated from Darlington High School and obtained her teaching degree from UW-Platteville. After college, she lived in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where she met her husband, Garner Oswald. They then built a life together in Verona, Wisconsin. She dedicated over thirty years of her life to educating young minds, teaching both kindergarten and first grade in the Verona Area School District. Many of her former students spoke of the lasting influence she had on their lives.

She always put family first and had boundless love for her husband, three daughters, their husbands and her grandchildren. Throughout her life she enjoyed going to her children’s music competitions, her grandchildren’s sports games and concerts, family trips to Colorado and California, and summers in Bagley, Wisconsin. She had a very creative side and made use of her art degree by making crafts of all kinds.

Her life was guided by her deep faith in God. Nancy had a charitable spirit and some of her best friends were the ladies of St. Andrew’s Council of Catholic Women (CCW). She spent countless hours volunteering at various church functions. She also served as the CCW treasurer for decades.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Garner Oswald; three daughters Beth (Kevin) Barwick, Molly (Karl Fekete) Oswald and Kris (Mike) Trapp; two grandchildren Dr. Corey Barwick and Ashley (Adrian) Brambila.

She is also survived by her brother Dr. Joseph Micka; nieces Sara (Salvatore) Patricolo and Pauline (Billy) Halacka; nephew Paul (Michelle) Micka; and great-nephews Jonathan and Matthew Micka.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, sister Norma Bahowick, brother-in-law Frank Bahowick, sister-in-law Mary Micka, father-in-law Franklin Oswald, mother-in-law Caroline Oswald and great granddaughter, Catalina Brambila.

In accordance with Nancy’s wishes, a private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers, Nancy requested that donations be made to Society of Saint Vincent DePaul.

Mrs. Oswald was my Kindergarten teacher in Verona in 1971. She taught in the old brick building (the gymnasium?) back then. I remember we made a cookbook of favored recipes and we still make "Mrs. Oswald's casserole" to this day. I am sorry for your loss.

Ozzie, Beth, Molly and Kris, I am sad to learn of Nancy's passing. She was a great friend to my wife Joan and they enjoyed a lot of time together, even discussing UW-P years and other locations they both shared about Grant County. May God bless all of you, she will be in my thoughts and prayers forever.

I didn't know Nancy but I knew Garner and if his love and respect for her was any indication, she was indeed a jewel in the family crown.

I am so sorry for your family's loss. Nancy was a wonderful friend and teaching colleague. Her happy go lucky personality was infectious, and when she laughed, you couldn't help but laugh yourself. She helped me get my first teaching job in Verona, and I was lucky enough to be part of a wonderful first grade team. A lot of fun memories! ⭐️ My thoughts and prayers go out to your family during this difficult time.

There is a magnet on Nancy's fridge that says "Grandparents are for loving and caring" - and did she ever love and care for us grandchildren. There is an abundance of memories that I will cherish. Grandma was just the best flower girl at my wedding (see the photo on the photos tab). She always made holidays a treat for her family - putting on legendary Easter egg hunts well into her grandchildren's adulthood (no complaints here!), festive 4th of Julys in Bagley, WI with the whole family, Christmas traditions that brought forth so much laughter, and Thanksgivings where she showcased her cooking skills for her family. She gave the best advice - fearlessly leading with love and support. Her witty sense of humor and love with Grandpa always commanded the dinner table at family gatherings while her bright smile brought such comfort. And she gave the best of hugs. Love you Grandma.

Dear Ozzie, Beth, Molly and Kris. I have such fond memories of Ozzie and your mom from all the band shows that we did over the years in high school. She was such a sweet lady and always had a smile on her face. Prayers and thought to your entire family.

Dear Ozzie, Beth, Molly and Kris, My heart goes out to all of you at this very difficult time. So many memories I have of your wife and mother over the years of teaching with her. Her smile and positive attitude was always appreciated by the Verona staff at the school. Her witchy performances every Halloween brought smiles to many. All her years of providing lunches at funerals and organizing the church bazaars will go down in history as the longest tenure. She brought happiness to many students and staff. She will be greatly missed. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Sending huge hugs to your family.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
