Obituaries

MADISON – Marie T. Ely, age 96, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. Marie was an ordinary woman who had an extraordinary impact on those she met…and that’s only half the story. Marie Schwab was born in Madison and grew up in the Greenbush neighborhood. After graduating from West High she went to work at Great Lakes Naval Station in Waukegan, IL. It was there she met Robert Ely whom she married in 1942. After the war they made their home in Madison. Marie was an avid Milwaukee Braves and Brewers fan and rarely missed Jeopardy.

Marie is survived by her children, Michael (Kate), Christopher (Deb), Stephen (Pat), James, Barbara (Curt) Fuszard, and Jane (John) Hodel; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter. She is further survived by a plethora of nieces, nephews, other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband; 7 siblings; and daughter-in-law Judy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 North Sherman Avenue, Madison, with Msgr. Charles Schluter presiding. A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, March 31, 2017 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 North Sherman Avenue, Madison and again from 1:00 PM until time of Mass on Saturday at the church. A private burial will be held at a later date.
