Obituary For Lois Elizabeth Gartland
Madison - Lois (Mainwaring) Gartland, age 81, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth (Huth) Mainwaring. Lois married the love of her life, Francis Gartland, on June 27, 1964, in Billings, Montana. They were married for 55 years before he died in January of 2020. She felt her greatest accomplishment was her family; Theresa, Michael (Julie), Kelly (Kevin) O’Neill, Stacie (Neil) Williams and her grandchildren, Nicole (Tyler) & Ben; Colleen, Andy (Maria), Emma (David), & Gretchen O’Neill; and Grace (Francis) & Ella (Brrodie) Williams.
Lois grew up on a ranch near Billings, MT. She graduated from the College of Great Falls. Lois and Francis settled in Columbus, Wisconsin, to raise their wonderful family. Lois truly enjoyed working at the WI Department of Transportation and finally retired after more than 30 years. In addition to spending time with family, she enjoyed traveling the globe with Francis. She maintained a beautiful flower garden at her home and also enjoyed vegetable gardening at her garden plot. She was active with the Blackhawk Community Garden on the board as the secretary. She kept busy volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital Gift Shop and St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She always looked forward to meeting up with her former retired DOT coworkers.
Lois is further survived by her brother, Duane Mainwaring, of Billings, MT. She was preceded in death by her sisters Joan Boyd and Lillian Knoff, and her son-in-law Damon Williams.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to St. Mary’s Hospital for the loving care they gave Lois.
