Obituary For John Charles Clauder

Madison- The larger-than-life existence of John Charles Clauder ended far too soon on April 6, 2024. He succumbed to lung cancer with his beloved wife, Barbara, at his side.

John was a proud East Sider from his birth on November 16, 1937. He graduated from East High School in 1955. Both of his parents were hair stylists and owned their own shop, Earl and Evelyn’s. And it was there, above the Badger Candy Kitchen, that John learned the art of cutting hair. John became so skilled that he developed a national reputation and was featured in Vogue magazine. When he retired in 2013 after 60 years as a stylist, he was written up in the Wisconsin State Journal, featuring his career at the John Charles Salon and his exploits prospecting for gold in British Guiana, racing fast cars, and facing poker legend Johnny Moss in Las Vegas.

After a joyful and lengthy courtship, John married Barbara Clauder on June 1, 2002, and by doing so found himself with a family that adored him. Matt (Gabriela) Brink, Katherine (Steve) Davis, Lisa (Randy) Lagman; and grandchildren, Sloan Davis, Logan Brink and Lucas Brink were always in his thoughts and heart.

John had an absolute passion for golf, as his friends at Maple Bluff Country Club will attest. He also loved and excelled at Texas Hold’em poker. The Badgers and Packer Football games were a must watch for him. John and Barbara loved to travel and spent 16 winters in their home away from home, the Dominican Republic. They also enjoyed two Viking River cruises through Europe.

John was a consummate storyteller, and his jokes were legendary. No one has a more wonderful laugh and twinkle-in-his-eye sense of humor.

The family would like to thank Dr. Marty Mozena, Dr. Toby Campbell, the Carbone Cancer Center and Agrace for their compassionate skill and care. They also wish to thank current and past members of Family 58 for their love and support.

John is also survived by his family and cousin, Edward (Bonnie) Wilson; sister-in-law, Kathryn Ludwig and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Evelyn Clauder; and his first wife, Linda Clauder.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Details will be posted on the Ryan Funeral Home website.

RIP JOHN, our sympathy to your entire family. John we thought always resembled my father JOE W. CLAUDER of Madison, who passed away many year ago. Two very good looking men inside and out🙏🏻

John cut and styled my hair for over 40 years. I often joked that I knew him longer than any other man in my life except my father. I enjoyed John's stories about his amazing life and his fascinating family during those monthly styling sessions. I hope these memories and more ease the loss for his family and friends. RIP John!! I hear the golf courses in heaven are just the kind you like.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
