Obituary For John C. Mulhern

Sun Prairie – John C. Mulhern, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Mazomanie, WI, the son of Arthur and Esther Mulhern.

John attended schools in Montello where the family lived before he entered the Army in 1944 until 1946. John spent 7 months in Germany and returned August of 1945 when the war ended. Upon his return home his family moved to Waunakee and that is where he met Betty Kessenich who he married on July 23, 1949. John’s greatest joy has always come from his beloved family. John and Betty were blessed with five children; Tim (Kari) Mulhern, Lynn (Rick) Palmer, Kris (Bill) Simon, Tom (Barb) Mulhern (deceased) and Richard (Deb) Mulhern. They were also blessed with 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

John worked for a while at MG & E before becoming a salesman for Coca Cola, then for Pepperidge Farm and the rest of his working career for the State of Wisconsin.

John loved all sports, especially the GB Packers and UW Badgers. He was fortunate to have Packer season tickets from 1959 and was also a Share Holder of the Packers. He was proud to participate in the first Badger Honor Flight out of Madison, as well as attending a Super Bowl, Rose Bowl and seeing a professional boxing match between Liston and Patterson.

He was an active member of American Legion Post #360 in Waunakee and St. Peter Catholic Church, where he served as an usher.

Along with his wife Betty of 67 years, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, John is survived by his siblings, Virginia Littel, Jim and Neal Mulhern, Dody Dulaney and Terry (Jayne) Mulhern; and many other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Tom, daughter –in-law, Barb and siblings, Frances, Arline, Kathleen, Tom and Bill.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 20, 2016 at ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, at 11:00 a.m., with Msgr. Charles Schluter officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass.

The family would like to thank Dr. Leo Schug and his staff as well as Home Health United and Agrace HospiceCare for their loving and gentle care.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church or to the Tom Mulhern Scholarship fund at the UW Foundation.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
