Obituary For Joan R. Gugel

Madison - Joan R. Gugel, age 83, passed away in the home she loved so dearly on Friday, February 14, 2025. Joanie was born in Madison, WI on August 24, 1941, the youngest child of William and Ruth (Heydon) Strang. She married George “Barney” Gugel Sr. in Rockford, IL, on September 10, 1966. Joanie loyally served the State of Wisconsin for 51 years, and celebrated her retirement with a guest appearance of Governor Scott Walker.

Joanie had a zest for life. She enjoyed dancing. She had many, many friends and loved spending time with them for every occasion, including Badger Saturdays, Packer Sundays and her infamous “122 year” annual birthday celebrations in August.

Joanie had a passion for animals, and nurtured many furry children throughout her lifetime, including Fritzy (her dog) and her cats, Troubles, Scampi, Sassy and so many others. She was a caring and giving person and was a generous philanthropist.

Joan is survived by her two stepdaughters, Deborah Gugel (Brian Templeton) and Denise (Hal) Stieve; and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Barney” Gugel Sr.; her two stepsons, Carl Gugel and George Gugel Jr; her parents, William and Ruth Strang; and her sister, Joyce Strang.

A celebration of life for Joan will take place at from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at American Legion Post 481, 5337 River Rd, Waunakee, WI.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
