Obituary For Jerome "Jerry" Clarence Duren

DeForest - Jerome “Jerry” Clarence Duren, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7. Jerry was born on January 13, 1937 to Jacob and Clara (Bodendein) Duren on a small farm in Cazenovia, WI. After graduating from Cazenovia High School, he relocated to the Madison area and started working for MG&E until his retirement in 1999.

Family was very important. He married the love of his life Ruth (Dopheide), on August 6, 1966 and loved spending time with his two sons John and Eric, their wives Barbara (Ballweg) and Sherry (Oeffler) and especially loved time with his grandchildren Caleb, Colin and Courtney.

Jerry was an active member of the DeForest community for over 50 years. He was selected for the DeForest Youth Baseball Hall of Fame, a member of St. Olaf’s Parish, and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to golf, deer hunt, and was well known for his brownies and Duren Dip. Jerry was known to greet you with a smile, make you laugh with a story and tell bad jokes. As he would often say, “I would have been older but was sick for two years.”

Jerry is survived by his sons, John (Barbara) of Kewaskum and Eric (Sherry) of Altoona; grandchildren Caleb, Colin, and Courtney; sister, Jeanette Michaels; brothers-in-law Harry (Mary Kay) Uhlenkamp and Roman Steffes; sisters-in-laws Joan (Don) Wiederhold, Rita Smith and Mary Lou Duren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth; his parents, and siblings, Donald, Dean, Joseph, Raymond, Paul, and Janice Braun.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at ST. OLAF’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 615 Jefferson Street, DeForest, WI beginning at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 6924 Lake Road, DeForest on Friday, July 14, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at St Olaf’s Catholic Church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the DeForest Community Center in Jerry’s name.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jerry through the Community Center. He was the 'quick whip' for funny comments when I served him meals for lunch, verified his numbers for Bingo or greeted him at the door of the Family Restaurant on Wednesdays. Loved his smile, comical stories of his experiences in Deforest and relatable recollections of working for MG&E. Thanks for the memories, Jerry! You are very missed! Thanks for your support of the Center. You had a wonderful and caring family. Liz T.

Jerry Duran The Boy Scouts had a motto "Be Prepared" nobody I mean nobody adhered to this motto more than Jerry Duran, in fact he should be awarded Super Eagle Scout for the degree he followed it. Every task Jerry had he analyzed it to the point he knew every size screw or nail he would need, every tool he would use, before he even got started. Jerry could tell you where to find the best donuts, best coffee, best restaurants and do the research to be able to find whatever you needed. Once we visited Ruth & Jerry and Jerry was in the process of getting ready for a deer hunting trip. He had the camper top that was on the back of that truck so loaded, I swear there wasn't any room left in there even for a "fart" Another incident, Ruth was already gone, Jerry had rented a cabin at Lake Panaroma for a week, and had invited us down to visit him. It was his last day there and I helped him load his car to go home. Did I mention he was there for a week? He had these giant plastic totepans, not only did we fill the trunk but the entire back seat of the car. I swear he had enough supplies to last a month, but that was "Jerry" I'm sure John and Eric can elaborate on this even more as they were the one's that had to help unload the truck on those hunting trips The hunting trips might be over but I'm sure Jerry couldn't be happier than to be able to be with Ruth again. To the family of Jerry, My parents were neighbors of Ruth and Jerry and Jerry was always very kind and friendly to me and my family. He was also a good friend to my father who had a debilitating disease but Jerry visited with him often. He was a good friend. Our sympathy is with the family at this difficult time. Sincerely Mike and Julie Meyer

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
