Obituary For Jay Michael Borroughs

Jay Michael Borroughs passed away on July 10th, 2023. Jay was born February 21, 1947, in Waukesha, WI. Jay is the son of Jay W. Borroughs, and Lillian V. (Smith) Hekkers. Jay went to school at St. Joseph’s and Waukesha South High School and pursued his B.S and M.S. degrees in education at UW Platteville. Jay played football in both high school and college and was a member of the Lambda Sigma Pi fraternity at UWP.

While attending Platteville Jay met his future bride of 51 years, Jane Gardner. The two were married in 1970 and moved to Madison, eventually settling in Verona. Jay began his teaching career working briefly with at risk youth (Ethan Allen School for Boys), Cuba City High School (2 years), and finally the Verona School District, where he retired from teaching after 36 years. Jay was awarded the honor of status in “Who’s Who in American Education” 3 times throughout his career.

During his tenure at VAHS, Jay taught many history courses, AP classes, chaperoned trips around the world with the band, and coached several successful boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Mr. B. was known for his toilet seat bathroom pass, his presence in the hallways, and underneath his hard exterior – those who knew him recognized his huge heart and caring spirit. Jay enjoyed watching his children Kate play volleyball and basketball and Scott play basketball. Jay also traveled the US and out of the country to watch Scott play in basketball games and tournaments, and ultimately win a NCAA basketball championship. Jay was very proud of his children, their accomplishments, and their families.

After retiring Jay and his bride traveled the world, seeing many U.S. National Parks, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Australia, Alaska, and many other countries across the globe. Jay had the gift of gab, and would easily strike up conversations with strangers, meeting many people and making friends worldwide as he traveled. More than anything, Jay’s favorite place to travel was with Jane to Door County.

Jay’s love of reading kept him entertained for hours, and his ROMEOS book club was a source of companionship and enjoyment for him with good discussion and even better friends. Jay also enjoyed watching “no-brainers” with close friends and family, and playing competitive games of Cribbage, Hearts, and Oh Hell.

Jay spent much time with his grandchildren who quickly became some of his favorite people. Jay traveled countless hours to watch his grandchildren excel in athletic, artistic, and musical endeavors and was one of their biggest fans. Jay could often be heard bragging about the grandkids and their achievements and would go on at length about their bright futures.

Jay is preceded in death by his father Jay, mother Lillian, stepfather Kenneth Hekkers, in-laws William and Jane (Liddle) Gardner, and wife Jane. Jay is survived by his brother Steve (Deb) Borroughs, daughter Kate (grandson, Alex Drye), son Scott (Rose, grandchildren Drake, Savannah, Cora, Haddon, Cheyenne, and Liam), and many nieces and nephews.

Thank you to Dr. Aric Hall, Dr. Thomas Hahn, and Dr. David Hennessy for the outstanding care that you all provided Jay at Carbone and UW Hospital and Clinics, and thanks to all other medical professionals that made Jay as comfortable as possible during his fight with multiple myeloma and cancer related care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 27th at St. Andrew Catholic Church; 301 N. Main St. Verona, with Monsignor Kevin Holmes presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. to the time of Mass on Thursday at the church. Reception to follow immediately after.

So very sad to find out my grade school classmate passed away. So very sorry for your loss.🙏

  • July 27, 2023

Mr. Borroughs was so much more than just a teacher. He will be sorely missed. My favorite memory is from the European concert tour, 2002 - Mr. B was back by the video camera, and he started conducting along to the Radetzky March! ♥️

I have not lived in Verona for long, but got to know Jay and Jane a bit as they reached out with kindness as neighbors. I enjoyed stopping to chat with them when I was out walking my dogs, and Jay in particular, loved to offer my dogs a treat. I could tell right away that Jay and Jane were special folks. I'm sorry for your family's loss. <3

My sincere condolences to Kate, Scott and all those beautiful grandchildren . Your sadness is so strong right now, but your memories will help. Both the good ones and the sad ones. You had wonderful parents, the Jay & Jane duo, and I had 2 great friends! Your dad was my teacher first, Class of 75. Then a co-worker from 1984 through his retirement. It took a while before I could refer to him as Jay, but he never stopped calling me Red. And he was a good friend and someone I enjoyed running into at Miller's or the library. He had such a positive impact on so many people. He will be missed. All my love. 💜🙏💜 Red / DT / OLIT (in training) Diana (Slattery) Trowbridge

Mr. Borroughs was a fantastic high school teacher and friend. Besides history, he shared his life wisdom with me that I have always remembered. He will surely be missed but what a wonderful life lived.

Mr B was my history teacher and basketball coach. Can still remember hearing him yell "boards boards!" along with acting it out. He was also my neighbor and loved to treat my dogs on his walks. Mr B had such a positive influence on me. He was one of the real GOOD guys. RIP Mr B. Carren Gummin

Jay was among my favorite teachers. Lucky to have several classes w him - he had a passion for History that brought the subject to life! I learned so much from him, and he was wise and fun. Deepest condolences to those left behind. Will continue to remember you incredibly fondly, Mr. Borroughs.

I graduated from Verona HS in 1996 and still think about what an awesome guy and teacher Mr Borroughs was. His AP History course was a blast and on par with a college course. I loved that he enjoyed our end of the year class pranks and thought out of the box for class projects, not just requiring papers. He was what all teachers should aspire to be. Roberta Stellick

I will always remember Mr. Burroughs as one of the good guys. He made Verona High a great experience. It was an exceptional honor to recruit his son, Scott, to play at UW-Platteville. I'll never forget when we pulled up the bus and your beaming smile as a proud father.

Mr. Borroughs was my favorite teacher. I have great memories of AP European History, and in particular Quiz Bowl and debates in class. I remember his no-nonsense attitude, and his humor. Ramie "Red" Leonard.

I was one of the many students that Mr. Borroughs had a positive impact on. The most impactful lesson that he taught me was "if you don't learn from the past, you're doomed to repeat it". I always looked forward to my next conversation/lesson with him, my last being at the Verona beach while he was fly fishing. Verona was lucky to have him, I respected him and he will be missed, but I'm happy that he's now reunited with Mrs. Borroughs, she was the best 🙂 Aaron Osten

I had the pleasure of meeting Jay at Noel Manor. He was so caring and nice. He donated many bottles of wine for our wine lovers and bought me a beautiful plant. Jay will be missed by us all at Noel Manor and my deepest sympathies to his family at this difficult time. Michelle Zinck

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
