Obituary For Elizabeth Caroline Graves

DEFOREST – Elizabeth Caroline Graves, age 78, passed away on November 7, 2020 at the UW Hospital in Madison. She was born on June 30, 1942 in Columbus, WI to parents Harris and Joyce (Johnson) Etscheid.

Elizabeth “Liz” graduated from high school in Waterloo, WI. She went on to complete cosmetology school and was a beautician for many years. She was a hard worker and throughout her career also worked in the fast food industry, as a crossing guard, as a special needs aid at West High School in Madison, as well as a daycare worker in Dane, WI. Liz always had a love for children and animals. As a crossing guard, Liz not only crossed children, she had pet squirrels that she also crossed. She cherished her trips up north with her close friends, Diane Wangerin and Sharon Witt.

Liz had a strong faith in her Lord Jesus Christ. She was bold in her faith and shared it with many. Her favorite fellowship was House of Praise. Liz loved her worship music daily and one of her favorite old rock and roll songs was “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis. She will always be remembered as a trooper, who made the best of life.

Liz faced many challenges during her lifetime. While commuting to work at the daycare, she was in a serious car accident resulting in serious injuries. She later suffered a stroke on her left side, leaving her wheelchair bound. Though these times were very difficult, if someone asked Liz “how are you doing?”, her reply would always be “I’m getting better every day”.

A special thank you goes out to Care Wisconsin and care givers following Liz’s stroke for their good care, and to the doctors and nurses of the UW Palliative Care Unit for taking good care of Liz and keeping her comfortable after her fatal fall.

Liz is survived by her faithful friends that stood by her through everything, Diane (Mel) Wangerin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert “Bob” Graves; cousin, Gene; adopted great-nephew, Cody Blomgren; and her beloved animals.

A private service will be held at a later date. To view and sign this guestbook, please visit: www.ryanfuneralservice.com.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
