Obituary For Edward Main

Edward Donald (Ed) Main, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Ed was a lifetime Madisonian. He was born in 1937 to Edwin and Martha Main (Dettmann). He graduated from West High School and went on to attend UW-Madison, where he received bachelor’s degrees in economics and law and his JD (juris doctorate). He served briefly in the Army National Guard. He spent his entire career working for the State of Wisconsin, starting at the then Department of Conservation (now known as the Department of Natural Resources), but spent most of his career as an attorney for the Department of Administration and served as the Chair of the Deferred Compensation Board since the Board’s creation until stepping down at the age of 79. He enjoyed his work with the State of Wisconsin so much that he returned as a Limited Term Employee continuing his work as an attorney for Employee Trust Funds for an additional 14 years after his retirement. He loved classical music, and was an avid reader, runner, and Badgers and Packers fan.

He is survived by his loving wife Jean; two daughters Laurie Palchik (Brad) and Cindy Main; two stepchildren, Kris Hale (Stephen) and Brack Hale; two grandchildren, Dylan Palchik (Keri) and Amber Graffin (Scott); and two great grandchildren, Killian Palchik and Lincoln Graffin. He is also survived by his sister, Sue Jordan (Robert) and his half-brothers Greg Main (Robin) and Ron Main (Signe).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice in Ed’s name.

A visitation will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memory Gardens Chapel, 7302 Mineral Point Rd, Madison. Brief committal prayers will begin at 2:00 p.m.

I worked with Ed for many years while he was the Chair of the WI Deferred Compensation Program Board. He played a large role in creating and guiding the primary supplemental retirement savings plan for public employees in WI. I appreciated his commitment to public service and willingness to continue to share his expertise on the Board, as well as his sense of humor. He will be missed. Peace to Ed's family -

I had the pleasure of working with Ed at ETF while he was an LTE. He was always the nicest guy and so funny! I truly enjoyed working with him. I remember one day when a coworker and I played a trick on Ed. We had those horrible movable partitions and Ed was working in a "cubicle" so before he got to work, we made his workstation into a 4X4 cube leaving him with a small table for his computer and his chair. We waited to hear him come in and being the character that he was, he never made a peep. A while later we checked in with him and there he sat in his "micro-cube" working away on his computer! When he saw us of course, he beamed at us with his mischievous grin. He definitely got even! Several years later I was working at DHS and found that one of my co-workers was Laurie Palchik! Small world! We definitely lost one of the good ones! Take care Main family.

I KNEW HIM. I ALSO WORKED FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION. MY DEEPEST REGARRRDS TO HIS FAMILY.

  • December 14, 2023

I will always remember Ed. I was the first Legal Counsel to the Governor (and also Office Director) to Tommy G. Thompson. Later in his administration, other appointed positions including at DOA and as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Revenue. I met and worked with many talented people during my tenure in state service. One of my favorite was Ed Main. Extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and personable, he offered me sage advice and assistance many, many times. Ed was the epitome of the very best of public service--and he was a damn good lawyer. The State of Wisconsin is a better place because of Ed Main. RIP, friend and mentor.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
