Obituary For Donald J. Schmitt

Madison - Donald J. "Don" Schmitt, age 92, happily left this world on Sunday, January 7, 2024, to be with his beloved wife, Veronica, in heaven after missing her deeply for seven years. He was born on May 14, 1931, in Madison, WI, the son of Aloysius "Al" and Loretta (Marx) Schmitt. Don was a lifelong resident of Madison, graduating from Edgewood High School. Shortly after, he got married to Veronica and enlisted in the Air Force. Don had several jobs after that at the City of Madison, Sign Shop, Montgomery Wards, and the longest being at the Madison Fire Department where he retired as Captain after 32 years of service.

Don and Veronica enjoyed many years of traveling the entire world together, going everywhere at least once except Australia. They also enjoyed driving across the US and seeing the country in their motorhomes.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Veronica; parents, Al and Loretta Schmitt; and brother, Father Al Schmitt.

Together, Don and Veronica produced the loves of their lives, seven children, Peggy (Ed) Carberry, Deborah (Dave) Fahey, Barbara (Bernie) Schmitt, Donald (Mary) Schmitt, Cindy (Mark) Tiggelaar, John (Renee) Schmitt and Mary Kae Schmitt. They had several grandchildren, Christine White, Stephen Fahey, Carolyn Fahey, Catherine Wessling, Michael Schmitt, Rebeca Eastman, Rosemarie Bormann, EJ Carberry, Jessica Schmitt, Nathan Schmitt, Matthew Schmitt, Kaleena Tiggelaar and Kya Tiggelaar; and 8 great grand kids. Don was further survived by his brother, Joseph (Rosine) Schmitt.

I was a very lucky girl (granddaughter) to be born into the woundful family you created. I will cherish the lessons you taught me along the way, from being in the work shop , to building fences and benches or riding in the back of the pick up truck or trying out the well water first. You were loved so much and we all knew how much you loved us. I'll keep trying to make you proud. You and Grandma set the bar very high. Always and Forever ❤️

Don was a great old world man who was totally devoted to the whole family. Being my father-in-law was the greatest thing ever, he took the time to take me under his wing to teach me so many things about fixing anything, about being a man, and always being available for family. I will be eternally grateful 🙏. RIP Don.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
