Obituary For Dean L. Baltzer

Madison- Dean L. Baltzer, age 87, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the Madison Veteran’s Hospital Hospice Center. Dean graduated from Earlville High School in Earlville, Iowa, on May 22, 1953. He then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, for two years. From 1958 to 1963 Dean served in the United States Army. He was stationed in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where he served as an SP4 Military Police Photographer. During that time, he also spent time in Trinidad, Colorado, and the Panama Canal. Dean received several Letters of Appreciation from his superiors expressing their appreciation for the exemplary way in which he performed his duties under their command. He received an Honorable Discharge on October 31, 1963.

Upon his return from service, he was employed as a Meat Cutter for many years at local supermarkets. Dean then became Meat Supervisor for Gateway Foods out of LaCrosse. He serviced markets in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Dean married Shirley Witz on July 19, 1968, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madison, WI.

Dean was an avid bowler and was in several leagues. He loved the times spent on a golf course. Working in the garden outside our condo was his pride and joy. Throughout Dean’s life he continued his love for photography. He took many pictures of the fountains and the grounds of our complex, and anything else that sparked his fancy.

For the past year Dean went to the Colonial Club Day Care Center in Sun Prairie. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there and met many new friends. On behalf of our family, we extend our deep appreciation to the staff at the Center, as well as his drivers, for their many kindnesses, and the care and compassion they showed towards him.

We also would like to express our deep appreciation to the nurses and doctors who cared for Dean while he was in Hospice at the VA. He received kind and compassionate care, and we will be forever grateful.

Dean is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Kirk, and Steve (Julie); a daughter, Jody Wall; and a granddaughter, Britney Simpson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence, and Margaret, his two brothers, David and Daniel, and his sister, Marla Bell.

Dean will be greatly missed by the members of our family.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin.

Shirley - this is your cousin Mary Braund Schaefer - I am just sending you all my love and to tell you all that I am really sorry to hear about Dean - I didn't get to know him real well but the reunions I got to know him a little and he seemed like a person and I wish I could have known better (I didn't even get to know Shirley real well except when she came to see Grandma and Grandpa Braund). But they were family and I loved everyone of my family members. Better sign off because I could write a whole letter but better not. Just know that you all are very loved. Rick/Mary (Braund) Schaefer.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
