Obituary For Daniel “Dan” Patrick Mooney

Daniel “Dan” P. Mooney, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 17, 2023. He was born to Patrick and Joyce (Hewitt) Mooney in Madison, WI. Dan married Lynne Pettine on June 5, 1987, in their backyard in Madison, WI.

Dan had a love for nature and being outside. Whether it was walking with his dogs, snow shoeing across Lake Monona, riding his motorcycles all over the countryside, running up and down Olbrich Hill or gardening and landscaping his yard.

Dan worked at Bock Water Heaters for over 35 years, often riding his bicycle to work. He took great pride in being in great shape, walking 3-6 miles a day and in being able to do the physical work necessary to do his job with perfection till his retirement.

Dan was a life-long East Sider attending Marquette and St. Bernard’s grade schools, eventually graduating from East High school in 1971 and then studying at UW Eau Claire soon after. He was an exceptional athlete, was known to play a mean game of basketball, could hold his own running track or when playing football, baseball and almost any other sport. Dan truly had a one-of-a-kind personality. He took great pleasure in helping people, genuinely cared about everyone he met and befriended throughout his life. Dan was always there with a helping hand or with a word of encouragement with friends and family when needed while volunteering at local food banks and churches he attended. He was frequently seen watching youth sports on the East Side standing tall on the sidelines cheering loudly when needed to motivate family and friends he watched play.

Dan was a man of deep faith, beliefs, and convictions. He was also one that tended to stand out in a crowd when you saw him, especially when wearing his signature suspenders. And it seemed like no matter where he went someone there would recognize him and yell “moon” how is it going. Dan will be missed. He indeed was larger than life to many he met, helped, and cared about. Heaven is a better place with him in it. May God welcome him with open arms.

Dan is survived by his wife, Lynne; son, and family by marriage, Jason Cowee; grandchildren, Chaz, Caleb, Chloe, Cameron Cowee; great grandchildren, Cataleya, Alexis, Avery Cowee; goddaughter, Sandi Lynne Loftus; mother, Joyce; siblings, Dennis (Jeanne), Tom (Sue), Sandra; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his great grandson, Joey Cowee; father, Patrick Mooney; brother-in-law, Jeffrey Martinson; nephew, Michael Mooney; grandniece Peyton Martinson; both paternal maternal grandparents, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Condolences

Sincerest condolences to Joyce and the Mooney family from the Hartl family. It was always a pleasure talking with Dan - he seemed to always put others before himself and, as with all the Mooneys, we are better people for having known him. We wish you peace.

I was so very sorry to read of Dan's sudden passing. Dan and I chatted a number of times, both when he was working at Princeton Club, and on the Olbrich Bike Path, where we bumped into each other and talked probably half a dozen times. Dan was always friendly and curious, asking me about my walking sticks, what I liked about them, and how he could get some, as well as chatting about the neighborhood, and the interesting folks in it. I knew him as "Suspender Dan", a nickname he joked would help me remember his name when we bumped into each other, since he was always wearing those signature suspenders on his walks. The world needs more "Suspender Dans"--kind folks who stop to chat with a neighbor and ask how they're doing. I'm glad we had the chance to talk now and then, and I'm so sorry for the family members who no longer have him in their lives. Peace to all who knew Dan and are grieving his loss. --John Stofflet, Eastmorland neighbor

I first met Dan when several of my high school classmates and I worked at Bock during the summer. He was the hardest working employee at Bock and was left to his own course doing whatever needed to be done. He was the highest value personal asset they had and everybody knew this. Many years passed and I was working for and met his wife Lynne, not knowing that she and Dan were a couple. I spent time over the last four decades spending time here and there with Dan. I imagine I was like a lot of people who were able to spend time with him. They found out that he was all about giving to others, his time, his friendship and genuine kindness. I admired him for all that he made himself. He was a remarkable man, well liked and a timeless example of what good character looks like.

I came to Madison to visit with my mother and share the Christmas holiday with her, during which, I was deeply saddened to read the notice of Dan's passing. May I offer my heartfelt condolences to all of Dan's family. Dan and I started out as competitors in athletics at the grade school level. As we continued our competition through out junior high, we were starting to know a little bit more of each other even though coming from different schools. By the time we both entered East High as sophomores, we already had a budding friendship. And it was during the three years at East that we became best of friends, both on and off the court. As athletes, we shared many victories together as well as our fair share of defeats. As classmates, ,...it was always an adventure to say the least...we did have fun!! Dan was a great friend and always fun to be around. We shared many of the same friends and you could count on Dan to make sure everyone was doing OK. His approach to friendship was unique .....along with his sincerity of our own well being, he enlightened us with his highly developed humorous personality. What a great friend ! So as we say goodby to Dan, may we ask our Lord God to bless him, and to be gracious unto him.....and to finally give him peace. Rest comfortably my friend.

From Hunter Mickelson and Family My family and I lived next door to Dan for most of my childhood.  He was everything you could hope for in a neighbor and we were so fortunate to have him in our lives.   My brother and I looked up to Dan from a young age and we respected him unconditionally.  In many ways, he served as a father figure to us; taking us out to eat, attending our football and basketball games, and showing genuine interest and compassion in our endeavors.  Many times, Dan would walk over to shoot hoops with me and ask how I was doing in school.  He always impressed us with how good his shot was. He would also take my brother and I to McDonald's and bring it back home to eat on the lawn.  We could not believe how much Dan could eat and to us that was the coolest thing ever. Dan also taught me many valuable lessons through how he interacted with others to the way he led with example.  One small but meaningful lesson is each winter he would be the first person to shovel his driveway and sidewalk, and every time it was meticulously done to perfection.  Occasionally, I would catch him outside before he finished, and we would chat for a few minutes before getting back to work.  Through something as simple as shoveling, Dan taught me what hard work is like and the difference between doing a job and doing it perfectly.    When it was time for us to move, I remember cursing out loud as I struggled to mow the backyard hill and being surprised by Dan's voice calling out to me.  When he approached, he didn't pay any mind to the swearing, but instead did as he always did, checked in with me, asked how I was doing, and then went on to joke about this being the last time I get to mow the backyard hill. Dan was a staple of his neighborhood, community, and will be missed dearly by everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.

I was in total shock to read the passing of Dan! I had run into him just 2 weeks earlier on the bike path near Olbrich as he was taking his daily walk. I mentioned I had not seen him walking for some time. He commented that he is out there daily. I replied that I am as well, but more then likely different times of the day and that I do deviate the bike path taking different routes from time to time. We chatted and walked together until we arrived at a point where he turned off to continue his walk and I kept going in a different direction. I always viewed him as a physically fit guy in great health. May he rest in peace!

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
