Obituary For Daniel “Dan” Patrick Mooney
Daniel “Dan” P. Mooney, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 17, 2023. He was born to Patrick and Joyce (Hewitt) Mooney in Madison, WI. Dan married Lynne Pettine on June 5, 1987, in their backyard in Madison, WI.
Dan had a love for nature and being outside. Whether it was walking with his dogs, snow shoeing across Lake Monona, riding his motorcycles all over the countryside, running up and down Olbrich Hill or gardening and landscaping his yard.
Dan worked at Bock Water Heaters for over 35 years, often riding his bicycle to work. He took great pride in being in great shape, walking 3-6 miles a day and in being able to do the physical work necessary to do his job with perfection till his retirement.
Dan was a life-long East Sider attending Marquette and St. Bernard’s grade schools, eventually graduating from East High school in 1971 and then studying at UW Eau Claire soon after. He was an exceptional athlete, was known to play a mean game of basketball, could hold his own running track or when playing football, baseball and almost any other sport. Dan truly had a one-of-a-kind personality. He took great pleasure in helping people, genuinely cared about everyone he met and befriended throughout his life. Dan was always there with a helping hand or with a word of encouragement with friends and family when needed while volunteering at local food banks and churches he attended. He was frequently seen watching youth sports on the East Side standing tall on the sidelines cheering loudly when needed to motivate family and friends he watched play.
Dan was a man of deep faith, beliefs, and convictions. He was also one that tended to stand out in a crowd when you saw him, especially when wearing his signature suspenders. And it seemed like no matter where he went someone there would recognize him and yell “moon” how is it going. Dan will be missed. He indeed was larger than life to many he met, helped, and cared about. Heaven is a better place with him in it. May God welcome him with open arms.
Dan is survived by his wife, Lynne; son, and family by marriage, Jason Cowee; grandchildren, Chaz, Caleb, Chloe, Cameron Cowee; great grandchildren, Cataleya, Alexis, Avery Cowee; goddaughter, Sandi Lynne Loftus; mother, Joyce; siblings, Dennis (Jeanne), Tom (Sue), Sandra; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his great grandson, Joey Cowee; father, Patrick Mooney; brother-in-law, Jeffrey Martinson; nephew, Michael Mooney; grandniece Peyton Martinson; both paternal maternal grandparents, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
