Obituary For Catherine Frances Slamar

Catherine Frances Slamar, age 100 years., passed away after a good long life on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI.

Catherine became a nurse at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BS degree in Nursing and an MS degree in Pediatric Nursing. She was a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Diagnostic and Treatment Unit at the Waisman Center for many years.

Catherine was a devout and faithful Catholic and a longtime member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. For many years she attended daily Mass and participated in many study groups. In her late 90’s she made new friends in her ALPHA prayer and discussion group as she embraced the mission of a disciple to share her faith. Even as a patient in the hospital Catherine was known to invite young staffers to come to her parish for Mass. Her favorite quote from St. Thomas Aquinas was: “God doesn’t love us because we are good, we are good because God loves us.”

Catherine was a lifelong quilter who proudly made quilts for the Quilt of Valor Veterans, St. Mary Hospital Pediatrics unit, and many friends and charities. She followed current events, never shied away from talking politics, and enjoyed watching the Badgers basketball and football. (Catherine was disappointed that she had to miss much of the bowl game because she wasn’t “feeling up to par” on her last day with us.)

Catherine is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis, and Pauline Slamar Sr; two sisters, Emily (Regis) Strahler and Anne (Joe) Lozmack; and one brother, Louis (Frances) Slamar Jr.

A special thank you to nephew Louis and Margaret Slamar III, Erik Gyr, Ruth and Al Schams, Paula Bizot and Tammie and Robyn at All Saints Assisted Living for their special friendship and loving care.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on January 16, 2024, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Wilk presiding, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison WI. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Inurnment will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Saint George Cemetery, 2901 Sheridan Rd, Kenosha, WI.

I've known Catherine for 24 years. In 2000, I started a senior volunteer program at the Dean West Clinic. I posted a flyer at St. Thomas Aquinas and Catherine was the first person that contacted me, and a wonderful friendship began. Catherine was a delight. I'm not a quilter, but was in awe when she showed me photos and even brought some of her quilts for me to see. I have several small wall hanging badger quilts that she gifted me. After the volunteer program ended, Catherine and I kept in touch through cards. As with every holiday, I was once again pleased to receive a note from her this past Christmas. I will miss my dear friend. Claudia Bedker

Catherine was one of my nursing instructors in the early '80's. Later in life she was one of my neighbors. I loved her spirit and taught me we have many chapters in our lives. God Bless- Lou Osness

I had the privilege of getting to know Catherine through my mom, Ruth Schams, and her husband, Al Schams. Catherine was a delightful and remarkable woman, always curious about how I was doing and what I had been up to. In a group setting she would make sure to get an update from all present! Catherine and I shared a love of crafting. While I haven't gotten into quilting (yet), we both loved to sew and crochet, and make things for others. I miss her already, but am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know her. ~ Lisa Pederson (Ruth Schams' daughter)

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
