Obituary For Barry "Jay" Yapp

God had greater plans for Jay and so regrettably he was taken from us on July 5, 2024. Barry “Jay” Yapp was born on January 7, 1960, in Madison, WI. Jay grew up on Madison’s Northside, eventually buying a home where he lived his life as a true Northsider in every sense.

Jay was known to many people because of his huge heart, helping hand and ability to be a great host to all those who would stop by his home. Jay was known for his Sunday morning pancake breakfast. Jay loved people, if you wanted to buy something, Jay always had something for sale.

Jay was a painter by trade, learning the trade at a young age taught to him by his brother Craig who was his lifetime mentor and role model. Jay eventually worked in the trade through the Painters Labor Union and later, on his own. He loved his job and if you had time to listen, he would tell you everything you wanted to know about it or any other subject. Jay loved to talk about life, his experiences and Alcoholic Anonymous (AA).

He was an enthusiast, a dreamer, a lover and always had ideas. Though he never found that lasting “love” or had children, everyone loved Jay and Jay loved everyone. Jay’s nieces and nephews were an important part of who Jay was.

Jay’s first priority in his life was his devotion to AA, often reciting scriptures from the book and his faith in “God as higher power.” AA was Jay’s life, he fought hard everyday to be his best and was always in regular attendance at the Eastside Alano Club on Northport Drive. It became Jay’s family and his home away from home. He had many friends and supporters in the program. He mentored many with his experience and knowledge, and love for all of them with great loyalty. Jay eventually opened his home as a halfway house for men in the AA program, educating and mentoring them to live a better life. Above all, Jay was top notch at what he did.

Jay was always an avid motorcycle enthusiast from the day he learned to ride to his many Sturgis and cross-country adventures. If Jay wasn’t talking AA, he was talking motorcycles. He belonged to the Madison CC Rider’s for many years, then found he did better on his own, still keeping many of those brotherly friendships. Jay just loved to ride and be free.

Jay is preceded in death by his mother, Beverly (Yapp) Ott; grandmother, Gladys Nolen and grandfather, Verl Nolen. He leaves behind in heart, brother Craig (Joanne) Yapp; sisters, Peggy Yapp-Ott and Suzanne (Stoller)(Erik) Dalma; and all nieces and nephews who loved “Uncle Jay.”

Many thanks to Kyle who rented from Jay, stood by Jay, helping him in sick times and being his company for so many years. Our greatest appreciation to Kyle for everything you did for Jay. Thank you to all of his friends, old and new, for loving Jay as he was. Thank you to all of you through AA who knew Jay, supported Jay and loved Jay, for you were his “life.”

Jay would like it if you would stop for his Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 20th from 11:30 – 1:30 pm at the Eastside Alano Club, 1017 Northport Dr., Madison to retell some of the stories he can no longer share. A private burial will take place at a later date.

You are free now brother, ride among the angels, be at peace.

Jay has known me since I was in my 20's (about). When he first heard me sing he was at an awe and told me, that I had a memorizing voice. He was a very big support of mine. And I appreciated him so much. We compared stories and he gave me strength when I was going through thr worst times in my life,my mom passing,my best friend passing and what I was going through in my marriage. He was a great listener. And I as well. I knew his struggles, but not to this extent. This world is going to miss this man, and my heart is crushed. I'll miss you Barry, and between u and i,,you know how much. ❤️

Jay, what a BIG, big heart, and a giving and honest heart. I remember Jay from my first few months of AA meetings, and he was a light. Be at peace now, Jay. To Jay's family and loved ones, I am so sorry. My prayer for you is that his memory will be a blessing, and you all get a lot of support to get through the hard days. He will always be with you.

I've known Jay since he was around 12. He hung out with my younger brother Scotty. He was no Saint growing up, but then again, none of us Northsiders were. Say hello to everyone for me Jay! Steve Rothmann

Jay was a part of my youth back on the northside of Madison - back when there were a lot of shenanigans going on all the time - just having fun. Several years ago I moved up north but would run into him once in a while when I visited Madison. I am so sad to hear of his death - I have memories of him, and all the things our group did, in my head which I can't adequately put down on paper. I hope the demons are gone and you find the peace you deserve my old friend.

My deepest sympathies to the Yapp family. I met Jay a millennia ago when we lived on Vera Court. After we moved I never saw him again, but I did often think where is Jay or Peggy, like someone crossing your shadow. Rest in Peace Jay, we'll meet again.

I will miss your bear hugs, your honesty and your kindness. I will always hear your distinctive voice, and smile at your ability to pull off overalls as a staple to any outfit. We love and miss you. Keep shining~💙

I met Jay at Sherman Middle school. He was quiet but was a big presence. We all " hung out" at Warner park. He was liked by all and he was good to everyone.

  • July 10, 2024

I love you Jay. Ride on friend

  • July 10, 2024

Jay was a good soul. I have known him for many years even before AA. I too was a Northsider and shared much laughter and sorrow with Jay. Although I hadn't seen Jay very often in the last few years he would drop a text to say hi. He will be missed by many. Doreen Hinrichs (Lincicum)

I've known Jay for many years. Met him when we were 15. We hung out with the same group of friends. He spent time at my home and even baby sat my son. Never letting me forget he changed his poopy diaper. LOL. He told that story to a lot of people. He had a great sense of humor, very caring and helpful to so many people. Even my son when he was older, Jay tried to show him a different way of life. A sober life. I am grateful we were able to still hang out but with a different group of friends in later years. Rest in peace my friend. Give Jason a BIG hug from his mom. You will be missed- Melody Schmitt

Jay, I am lost without you. Getting on FB and seeing your daily prayer of encouragement and most importantly helping me understand my grandson's addiction to drinking. Gosh I will miss you and stopping by when I come home from Memphis. You were some kind of special. Ride hard and fast you've got many brothers up there to join in the fun. RIP MY FRIEND

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
